Do I Need A Tax Transcript?

Tax4

Taxpayers who need to verify their identity or provide proof of income could benefit from a tax transcript, which shows a wide range of tax-related information. The type of transcript that a person needs, however, will depend on the exact information he or she is looking for, so if you need help accessing your tax records, including a tax transcript, please reach out to an experienced Florida tax & IRS attorney for assistance.

Tax Return Transcripts

The IRS provides taxpayers with a few different types of tax-related transcripts, including what is referred to as a tax return transcript. These documents are a valuable source of information for taxpayers, as they include their adjusted gross income (AGI). A tax return transcript will not, however, show any changes made after the original tax return was filed. These kinds of transcripts are available for the current tax year, as well as for returns that were processed during the previous three years.

Tax Account Transcripts

The second type of IRS transcript is known as a tax account transcript and shows basic data, such as:

  • The type of return submitted by a taxpayer;
  • The filer’s marital status;
  • The filer’s adjusted gross income;
  • The taxpayer’s taxable income; and
  • All payment types used by the taxpayer.

Unlike tax return transcripts, tax account transcripts do record any changes made to original tax returns and are available not only for the current tax year, but also for the prior ten years.

Record of Account Transcripts

Taxpayers who need both a tax return and a tax account transcript also have the option of requesting a record of account transcript, which essentially combines these two documents into a single transcript.

Wage and Income Transcripts

Wage and income transcripts provide specific data about information returns submitted to the IRS, such as W-2s, 1098 and 1099 forms, and Form 5498. This type of transcript is available for up to ten years prior to the current filing year. Current tax year information, however, is usually not available until July.

Verification of Non-Filing Letters

The final type of IRS transcript is referred to as a verification of non-filing letter and is used in cases where a taxpayer needs to provide proof that the IRS doesn’t have a record of a 1040-series tax return for a specific year. These transcripts do not, however, indicate whether a taxpayer was actually required to file a return that year. Most verification of non-filing letters can be obtained after June 15th for the current tax year, or anytime for the prior three years.
